WELCOME to the First Presbyterian Church of Duluth! We’re proud to be the oldest congregation in the city – and we remain in our downtown home, a city landmark. Our history has made us strong and committed to bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to be “doers” of His word in our community. When you come for your first visit, here’s what you can expect:
First off, First Presbyterian Church is fully accessible: there is an elevator that accesses all three levels. Additionally, all three levels have outside accessibility. Of course, we have restrooms and they are accessible.
While parking downtown can seem daunting, rest assured we have plenty of free parking. We have two newly resurfaced parking lots with plenty of space including handicapped spots. Also, street parking is free on Sundays!
There are Bible and other Sunday School classes in the Fellowship area every Sunday morning, beginning at 9:15am – this is for ALL ages! Ask anyone to help you find a class.
The morning worship service begins at 10:30am. Holy Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of every month. You’ll meet new friends and feel welcome; just grab a spot and get situated – and prepare yourself for a meaningful worship experience. Our worship services follow a pattern of “doing things decently and in order,” but we also are flexible and people-oriented in our approach. Yes, there’s a structure to our worship services, but you’ll find within that structure a friendly, informal Christian atmosphere that adheres to Biblical teachings. The Sunday Worship Service unfolds around five major movements, which all point to the Word as Scripture:
1. Gathering Around the Word
2. Preparing for the Word
3. Hearing of the Word
4. Responding to the Word
5. Sending by the Word into the World
Following the service come downstairs to the Fellowship Hall for coffee and treats and get acquainted!
About our music: you’ll find a wonderful mixture of traditional and modern hymns. Sometimes, you’ll hear our Sunday School kids sing something special. Our small but dedicated Choir sings every Sunday. We use our pipe organ, a grand piano, an electronic keyboard – and sometimes we have a guitar, handbells, guest soloists – so, if you sing or play an instrument – just speak to us and let us know!
That’s what you can expect from us – and more. We’re a church “home” – so come and be a part of the family. Every person is a creation of God, and every person has gifts to share. Come and share your gifts through First Presbyterian Church!
